Final Grade Calculator

Find out what grade you need on your final exam to reach your desired course grade.

How it works: Enter your current course grade, the weight of the final exam, and your desired final grade. The calculator uses the formula: required score = (desired grade - current grade × (1 - exam weight)) / exam weight, and tells you if the target is achievable.

How to Use the Final Grade Calculator

Enter your current grade percentage in the course (before the final exam), the weight of the final exam as a percentage of your total grade, and the grade you want to achieve in the course. The calculator instantly shows you the minimum score you need on the final exam and whether that target is achievable. Results update in real time as you adjust the inputs.

This tool is invaluable during finals week when you need to prioritize your study time across multiple courses. By knowing exactly what you need on each final, you can allocate more effort to courses where a strong final performance can make the biggest difference in your grade.

Understanding the Final Grade Formula

The formula used is: Required Final = (Desired - Current x (1 - Weight/100)) / (Weight/100). This rearranges the weighted average formula to solve for the unknown final exam score. For example, if you currently have an 82% and the final is worth 25% of your grade, and you want a B (80%), you need: (80 - 82 x 0.75) / 0.25 = (80 - 61.5) / 0.25 = 74%. You would need at least a 74% on the final to maintain a B.

When the Target Is Not Achievable

If the required grade exceeds 100%, your desired grade cannot be reached through the final exam alone. In this case, consider whether your instructor offers extra credit, whether a grade curve is possible, or whether you should adjust your target grade. Knowing early that a target is unreachable helps you set realistic expectations and focus your energy productively.

Strategic Study Planning

Use this calculator for all your courses to create a study priority list. Courses where you need a high score on the final to maintain your grade deserve more study time. Courses where you already have a comfortable buffer can receive less. This data-driven approach to finals preparation is far more effective than studying all subjects equally, especially when time is limited.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the required final exam grade calculated?

The formula is: Required Final = (Desired Grade - Current Grade x (1 - Final Weight / 100)) / (Final Weight / 100). It rearranges the weighted average formula to solve for the unknown final exam score.

What if the required grade is over 100%?

If the calculator shows a required grade above 100%, your desired grade is not achievable through the final exam alone. You would need extra credit or a grade curve, or you should adjust your target.

How much does the final exam usually count?

Final exam weights vary by course, commonly ranging from 20-40%. Check your course syllabus for the exact weight, as this significantly affects the calculation.

What letter grade corresponds to each percentage?

In the standard scale: A is 90-100%, B is 80-89%, C is 70-79%, D is 60-69%, and F is below 60%. Some institutions use plus/minus grades with different cutoffs.

Can I use this for midterms too?

Yes. The formula works for any exam with a known weight. Enter your current grade from all work completed so far, the exam weight, and your target grade.
