How Much Water Does a Lawn Really Need?
The old rule of 1 inch per week is still the best starting point. One inch of water over 1 square foot equals 0.6234 gallons, so 1 inch over 1,000 sq ft is 623 gallons. Over 5,000 sq ft, that is 3,117 gallons per week. In extreme heat, cool-season grasses can benefit from 1.5 to 2 inches per week, while drought-tolerant warm-season grasses often thrive on 0.75 inch. The calculator gives you the exact number from your area, weekly depth, and sprinkler output.
Deep Watering vs Shallow Watering
Water deeply and infrequently — that is the single most important rule of lawn watering. A daily 10 minute sprinkle produces a shallow root system that dries out instantly when you miss a day. One long soak every 3 to 4 days drives roots 6 to 8 inches deep, where soil moisture is more stable, and dramatically improves drought tolerance. Aim to put down the full weekly amount in 2 sessions (cool-season) or 3 sessions (warm-season in extreme heat).
Finding Your Sprinkler's Output
Use the tuna can test. Place 6 empty tuna cans at random spots within your sprinkler's pattern and run the sprinkler for exactly 15 minutes. Measure the water depth in each can with a ruler and average them. Multiply by 4 to get the hourly output in inches. If the cans collected 0.25 inches in 15 minutes, your sprinkler puts down 1 inch per hour. To deliver 1 inch per week, run it 60 minutes total, split into 2 or 3 sessions. Also check for coverage — if the cans vary wildly, your sprinkler pattern is uneven.
Best Time of Day to Water
Early morning, 5 to 9 AM, is best. Evaporation is minimal, wind is calm, and grass leaves dry by midday so fungal diseases cannot take hold. Evening watering leaves leaves wet all night, which causes brown patch, dollar spot, and other turf diseases. Midday watering wastes 20 to 40 percent of water to evaporation and is banned during drought restrictions in many areas. If you must water by hand on weekends, do it early and thoroughly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many gallons in an inch of water over 1,000 sq ft?
623 gallons. That is the core conversion behind this calculator.
Should I water every day?
No — deep watering 2 or 3 times a week is better for root development.
When can I skip watering?
After significant rainfall — anything over 0.5 inches counts as a watering.
Is it OK to water in the evening?
Occasional evening watering is fine, but regular evening watering encourages lawn disease.
How much does lawn watering cost?
At 3 dollars per 1,000 gallons, a 5,000 sq ft lawn costs about 9 dollars per week to water.
