How the IVF Due Date Calculator Works

This calculator determines your estimated due date from your IVF embryo transfer date. Select whether you had a Day 3 (cleavage stage) or Day 5 (blastocyst) transfer, and the calculator computes your equivalent last menstrual period date, due date, current gestational age, trimester, and key pregnancy milestones. Because IVF provides the exact transfer date, due date calculations are more precise than those based on the last menstrual period.

The calculation works by converting the transfer date to an equivalent LMP date, then adding 280 days (40 weeks) for the standard gestational period. For a Day 5 blastocyst transfer, the equivalent LMP is 19 days before transfer (14 days for the ovulation-to-period offset plus 5 days of embryo age). For a Day 3 transfer, it is 17 days before. This alignment ensures your gestational age tracking matches standard pregnancy week milestones used by healthcare providers.

Day 3 vs. Day 5 Embryo Transfers

A Day 3 embryo (cleavage stage) has typically divided into 6-8 cells and is at an earlier developmental stage. A Day 5 embryo (blastocyst) has continued developing for two more days, forming a more complex structure with approximately 100+ cells, including the inner cell mass that will become the baby and the trophectoderm that will become the placenta. Blastocyst transfers generally have higher implantation rates per transfer because the embryo has already demonstrated its ability to develop past early stages.

Pregnancy Milestones After IVF

After IVF transfer, the first beta-hCG blood test typically occurs 9-14 days later to confirm implantation. An early ultrasound at 6-7 weeks checks for a heartbeat. The first trimester screening (NT scan) occurs around 12-13 weeks. The anatomy scan at 20 weeks is a detailed assessment of fetal development. The gestational milestones and trimester dates shown in this calculator follow the same timeline as naturally conceived pregnancies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the IVF due date calculated?

Subtract 19 days (Day 5) or 17 days (Day 3) from the transfer date to get the equivalent LMP, then add 280 days for the due date.

What is the difference between Day 3 and Day 5?

Day 3 embryos are cleavage-stage (6-8 cells). Day 5 blastocysts are more developed (100+ cells). Day 5 transfers typically have higher implantation rates.

Is the IVF due date more accurate?

Yes, because the exact fertilization and transfer dates are known, unlike natural conception where ovulation date is estimated.

What is the equivalent LMP?

A calculated date representing when your last period would have been if conception occurred naturally. It aligns IVF pregnancies with standard gestational age tracking.

When is an IVF pregnancy full term?

Like all pregnancies: early term at 37-38 weeks, full term at 39-40 weeks, late term at 41 weeks, post-term at 42+ weeks.
