Asphalt Calculator

Estimate tons of hot-mix asphalt, cubic yards, and truckloads for driveways, parking lots, and roads. Works in both imperial and metric.

Dense-graded HMA = 145 lb/ft³ (2,322 kg/m³). Leave default unless you know your mix.

How the Asphalt Calculator Works

Hot-mix asphalt (HMA) is ordered by weight, not volume, so the calculator converts your slab dimensions into tons based on the unit weight of the mix. The formula is: Tons = (Length × Width × Depth) × Density ÷ 2,000. Depth is entered in inches (or centimeters) and converted to feet (or meters) inside the calculation. The default density of 145 lb/ft³ (2,322 kg/m³) is the industry standard for dense-graded HMA used on residential driveways and most parking lots.

Recommended Asphalt Thickness

Thickness depends on subgrade quality and expected traffic. Residential driveways for passenger cars typically use 2 inches of compacted asphalt over 4 to 6 inches of compacted aggregate base. Add an inch if you park RVs, boats, or work trucks. Light commercial parking lots use 2.5 to 3 inches of asphalt over 6 to 8 inches of base. Heavy truck traffic needs 4 inches of asphalt minimum and a stiffer base. Always compact the base thoroughly before paving — a weak base will crack the best asphalt in a few winters.

Ordering and Truckloads

Standard dump trucks deliver 18 to 22 US tons of hot-mix. The calculator rounds up to full 20-ton trucks by default. Always order 5 to 10 percent more than calculated to cover compaction, spillage at joints, and variation in the subgrade. Running short on a pour is expensive because you pay for a second truck and fight cold joints, which are the first things to fail.

Tack Coat and Prime Coat

If you are resurfacing existing pavement, apply a tack coat of emulsified asphalt (about 0.05 gallons per square yard) before placing the new mat. For a fresh aggregate base, a prime coat (0.25 to 0.5 gal per sq yd) penetrates and stabilizes the surface. These are not calculated here but budget them in to avoid early bond failures.

Typical Driveway Asphalt Tonnage

Computed at the industry-standard 145 lb/ft³ density for dense-graded HMA. Use these to sanity-check your calculator result:

Driveway size 2" thick 3" thick 4" thick

12 × 50 ft (600 ft²)7.3 tons10.9 tons14.5 tons

20 × 30 ft parking pad (600 ft²)7.3 tons10.9 tons14.5 tons

Quick mental math: 1 ton of hot-mix asphalt covers about 80 sq ft at 2 inches thick, 55 sq ft at 3 inches, or 40 sq ft at 4 inches. A standard 20-ton dump truck covers about 1,600 sq ft at 2" or 800 sq ft at 4". Always order 5-10% extra for compaction and spillage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How thick should a residential driveway be?

2 inches of compacted asphalt over 4 to 6 inches of base is standard for passenger cars. Go to 3 inches for heavier vehicles.

What density should I enter for recycled asphalt?

Compacted recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) runs about 120 to 140 lb/ft³. Use 130 lb/ft³ if unsure.

How much extra asphalt should I order?

Add 5 to 10 percent for waste, compaction, and subgrade variation. Round up to the nearest full ton or truckload.

Can I pour asphalt in cold weather?

Hot-mix needs to be laid and compacted above 50 °F air temperature and before the mat cools below 185 °F. Cold patch works year-round but is not a permanent repair.

How long before I can drive on new asphalt?

Walk on it after a few hours once it cools. Drive passenger cars after 24 to 48 hours. Heavy vehicles should wait 5 to 7 days for the binder to fully set.
